Constructing and Using Social Networks: a Regulatory Focus Perspective

چکیده
This article examines the psychological underpinnings of social networks by drawing on regulatory focus theory—an overarching distinction between two basic motivational systems that underlie people's self-regulations, motivated cognitions, and strategic preferences. We propose that regulatory focus influences people's (a) networking strategies and consequent structures, (b) abilities to exploit different network advantages, and (c) perceptual network schemas. We also propose that organizations can influence members' network structures by cultivating cultures that induce different regulatory foci. Word count: 75 3 Scholars have increasingly pointed out that the structural influence in network analysis The structuralist approach, however, is not alone in de-emphasizing the possible effect of individual psychology on social structures. There has been relatively limited work in social psychology on how different psychological states affect the structures of the social world in which people live and work. Thus far, only a handful of studies have examined both psychological variables and network measures, focusing mainly on three research questions: a) whether individuals of certain personality traits tend to gravitate toward Saltz, & Mayer, 2004), b) whether the effect of network structure is moderated by personality, and c) whether the same social structure is perceived differently by individuals with different personality traits (Casciaro, 1998; Casciaro, Carley, & Krackhardt, 1999). Although findings from these studies have provided valuable evidence on the interplay between individual psychology and social networks, little research has gone beyond the analysis of personality traits. This paper is an attempt to bring in a new psychological perspective—individuals' general motivational systems. We argue that people's self-regulatory orientations, motivated cognitions, and strategic preferences are critical psychological forces that can drive the formation primary motivational systems—the promotion system and the prevention system. These two motivational systems differ in terms of not only their primary motivational concerns (e.g.,

The Role of Regulatory in Price Control and Spectrum Allocation to Competing Wireless Access Networks
With the rapid growth of wireless access networks, various providers offer their services using different technologies such as Wi-Fi, Wimax, 3G, 4G and so on. These networks compete for the scarce wireless spectrum. The spectrum is considered to be a scarce resource moderated by the spectrum allocation regulatory (“regulatory” for short) which is the governance body aiming to maximize the socia...
متن کاملA Sudy on Information Privacy Issue on Social Networks
In the recent years, social networks (SN) are now employed for communication and networking, socializing, marketing, as well as one’s daily life. Billions of people in the world are connected though various SN platforms and applications, which results in generating massive amount of data online. This includes personal data or Personally Identifiable Information (PII). While more and more data a...
متن کاملThe Impacts of Global Inequality in Social Networks: Examined in Three Major Theories
The rapid growth of modern long-distance communication technologiesboth in term of quality and quantity and the consequent emergenceof cyberspace in parallel with the real world, has led to new forms ofinequality which can be interpreted in three different ways. Using thethree-generation theory of social networks (Oral networks; Longdistancenetworks; and, Digital networks), one can make domesti...
متن کاملComparison of MLP NN Approach with PCA and ICA for Extraction of Hidden Regulatory Signals in Biological Networks
The biologists now face with the masses of high dimensional datasets generated from various high-throughput technologies, which are outputs of complex inter-connected biological networks at different levels driven by a number of hidden regulatory signals. So far, many computational and statistical methods such as PCA and ICA have been employed for computing low-dimensional or hidden represe...
متن کاملH∞ Sampled-Data Controller Design for Stochastic Genetic Regulatory Networks
Artificially regulating gene expression is an important step in developing new treatment for system-level disease such as cancer. In this paper, we propose a method to regulate gene expression based on sampled-data measurements of gene products concentrations. Inherent noisy behaviour of Gene regulatory networks are modeled with stochastic nonlinear differential equation. To synthesize feed...
